ST. AUGUSTINE –
Finn Weigelt scored both goals to help lead Flagler College to a 2-0 win over Clayton State University Saturday afternoon in a Peach Belt Conference men's soccer match at Saints Field.
Flagler improved to 4-0-1 overall and 1-0-0 in the Peach Belt. The Saints snapped a three-match losing streak to the Lakers. Clayton State, the PBC preseason favorite, dropped to 2-2-2 overall and 1-1-0 in conference play. Up next for Flagler is Lander University on Wednesday at 2:30 p.m. at Greenwood, South Carolina.
Finn Weigelt scored a pair of goals, one in the 22
nd minute and the other was the insurance goal in the 82
nd minute. His first goal was him sliding towards the goal box as he knocked in
Sam Reynolds' through ball with his left foot. Weigelt's second goal was a header off a cross pass from
Alex Alexandrou.
That would be more than enough for
Ryan Rivas who turned in his third clean sheet of the season as he recorded two saves. His counterpart, Mauricio Uribe, finished with one save for the Lakers.
Clayton State out-shot Flagler 10-6 and held a decisive 12-0 advantage in corner kicks. Flagler was whistled for 17 fouls while there were 10 cards handed out, six of which were Laker players. Clayton State played the majority of the second half a man down as one of its players received his second yellow card of the contest.
