MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. – Flagler College scored a total of three runs in the seventh and eighth innings combined but fell short 6-4 to Georgia College & State University in the first game of the Peach Belt Conference Baseball Tournament best-of-three championship series Thursday night at John Kurtz Field.
Georgia College improved to 33-20 overall. Flagler dropped to 29-23 and will need to beat GCSU twice tomorrow, with the first game starting at 2 p.m., to advance to the NCAA Division II Southeast Regional.
Trailing 6-1 going into the top of the seventh, the Saints strung three hits together, with the last being a single by
Taylor Clapp that scored
Mason Gray to cut the deficit to 6-2.
Trey Newland and Gray hit back-to-back RBI-singles in the top of the eighth to bring the Saints closer at 6-4.
Payton Palladino hit a lead-off double in the ninth, but got stranded at second base.
Joh Luke Glanton (10-4) scattered 11 hits and allowed four runs over eight innings of work to get the win for the Bobcats. Lex Kenny worked the ninth and earned his sixth save after he retired the side following the lead-off double.
Evan Cowan collected a pair of singles, scored a run, and drove in two more. Brandon Bellflower also had two singles and he scored a run.
Daniel Fischer (4-5) allowed two earned runs on five hits in 1.2 innings and took the loss.
Eli Roberts struck out a season-best five batters in relief.
Gray finished with two singles, a run scored, and one run batted in.
Jesse Sullivan hit two singles and drew a walk while Clapp had two singles and one RBI.
