Flagler eliminated by North Georgia in regional tournament

DAHLONEGA, Ga. – The Flagler College softball team took down Columbus State University 6-4 in their elimination game to go on to face University of North Georgia once again and eventually were eliminated in a 9-0 loss.
 
In game one, Emily Ricci got on base first with a walk and stole second to move into scoring position. Hannah Smith singled to left field to bring in Ricci for the Saints first run. A sacrifice fly from Kyla Knier saw the second run scored by Smith to end the top of the first. Columbus State added a run of their own in the bottom of the first. In the top of the third, Sydney Stewart started the inning off with a single to left field. Ricci connected for a double to left center that brought in Stewart to make it 3-1 for the Saints. The Cougars responded in the bottom of the third with three runs on three hits to take the lead 4-3. The top of the fourth saw three runs on four hits for Flagler with Mackenzie Smith leading with a single to right field. Back-to-back singles from Rylee Konowalchuk and Kiersten James allowed Smith to score to tie the game at 4-4. Stewart single to right field and brought in Konowalchuk, James scored on an error by the Cougars, putting the Saints back up 6-4. The Flagler defense stayed strong, ending the game in a victory to avoid elimination. 
 
Rachel Hester (8-7) earned the win after pitching five innings, facing 22 batters and striking out five. 
 
The Saints advanced to face North Georgia in another elimination game. The Nighthawks started the game off strong with five runs scored in the top of the first. Flagler had an opportunity in the bottom of the second with bases loaded and one out, but could not capitalize for a run. North Georgia added another run in the top of the third on a single through the left side, then added two more in the top of the fourth with a single up the middle to make it 8-0. The final run of the game came in the top of the fifth on a solo homer to left center for the Nighthawks, resulting in a 9-0 loss for the Saints and elimination from the NCAA Division II Southeast Regional.
