DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. –
Bryce Fitzgerald's run-scoring single in the ninth, along with another base hit by
Trey Newland, broke a 4-all tie and led Flagler College to a 6-4 win over Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University Tuesday night at Sliwa Stadium.
Flagler improved to 17-20 overall while Embry-Riddle dropped to 19-14. Flagler hosts the University of North Georgia in a three-game series starting on Friday at 5 p.m. at Drysdale Field.
With one out in the top of the ninth,
Luke Welborn bounced a grounder and the Embry-Riddle first baseman, Tyler Castelli, could not get a handle on, which was his second error of the game. His error in the first led to an unearned run.
Will Taylor came in to pinch run for Welborn and promptly stole second base. He advanced to third on a fly out and scored on Fitzgerald's single to right field to give the Saints the lead. Two batters later, Fitzgerald scored on Newland's single to right.
Blake Pesante came in to save the game in the home half of the ninth. He hit the first batter and then gave up a single to the next hitter. But, he wriggled out of trouble with a fly out, a ground out, and then he fanned the final batter to record his third save.
Drew Rosenberg (1-1) got his first career win as he tossed two-thirds of an inning and only allowed one hit.
Jesse Sullivan collected two singles and drove in two runs to lead the Saints.
Mason Gray added a pair of base hits and scored a run while
Caden Kresak finished with two singles. Newland had a single, scored two runs, had one run batted in, and stole three bases.
John Barone (3-2) took the loss on the hill for the Eagles. He allowed an unearned run on one hit with two strikeouts in 3.2 innings of relief work.
Alex Britton collected two singles and scored a run for Embry-Riddle.
