Welborn’s pinch hit RBI single in the ninth gives Saints a series-opening win

ST. AUGUSTINE – Flagler College pinch hitter Luke Welborn laced an RBI single to end the game in a 5-4 win over Georgia Southwestern State University in a Peach Belt Conference baseball game Friday night at Drysdale Field.

Flagler improved to 16-18 overall and 9-7 in the Peach Belt. Georgia Southwestern fell to 25-11 overall and 9-7 in conference play. The two teams meet tomorrow at 2 p.m.

Trey Newland led off the bottom of the ninth inning with a single through the left side of the infield. He stole second base and then just beat the throw to the plate on Welborn's single to center field. Newland eluded the tag by sliding towards the back of home plate and reached out with his left hand to swipe the bag.

The Saints took a quick 3-0 lead after Jesse Sullivan hit a bloop single to right-center to score two runs in the third inning. Flagler added an unearned run in the fourth to a 4-1 lead.

The Hurricanes tied the game in seventh on Cory Lee's two-run home run over the left field wall.

Blake Pesante (4-0) earned the win in relief for the Saints. He tossed a scoreless ninth inning with a pair of strikeouts. Daniel Fischer started and allowed four runs on five hits in seven innings. He retired the first 9-of-10 batters he faced. Fischer struck out six batters and induced 11 fly outs and four ground outs.

Payton Palladino collected a pair of singles and scored two runs for Flagler. Mason Gray singled twice and drove in a run while Caden Kresak went 2-for-4 with a double and he scored a run.

Grant Adams (6-4) took the loss in relief for the Hurricanes. He pitched the ninth and allowed one run on two hits. Nick McCollum started, scattered 11 hits, and allowed three earned runs with six strikeouts.

Miles Hartsfield hit a double and scored a run for Georgia Southwestern. Paul Hegeman also hit a double and scored a run while Matthew Manuel doubled, scored a run, and drove in another.

NOTES: The five hits for Georgia Southwestern tonight was a season low…The 1:46 time of game (TOG) was the fastest this season for Flagler and was the quickest nine-inning game since a 1:45 TOG vs. Claflin, April 21, 2023.
