Saints open PBC Tournament play on Thursday

ST. AUGUSTINE – The Flagler College women's basketball team finished in a tie for seventh place in the Peach Belt Conference and will be the No. 8 seed in this week's conference tournament at Americus, Georgia. Flagler will take on the No. 1 seed, and host school, Georgia Southwestern State University in the third quarterfinal game this Thursday at 5 p.m. at the Storm Dome.

The winner of the Flagler-GSW game will advance to the semifinal round on Friday and will face the winner of the University of North Georgia-Lander University game at 7:30 p.m.

Tickets have to be purchased in advance on-line at https://peachbeltconference.org/sports/2020/10/14/tickets.aspx. General admission, per day, is $10. Children aged five and under are free. PBC students will be admitted free with a valid identification from that school. Peach Belt Sports Passes with photo ID will be accepted.
 
Flagler finished the regular season with an 11-17 overall record and a 6-12 mark in conference play. Eight of Flagler's losses have been by 10 points or fewer. Georgia Southwestern is ranked No. 20 in the latest WBCA Division II Top 25. The Lady 'Canes have won their last seven games in a row and holds a 23-3 overall record and a 16-2 mark in league play.

Georgia Southwestern won both games this year – 87-68 on Jan. 3 at Americus and 80-64 last Saturday at St. Augustine. Destiny McClendon led the Saints with a 23.5 points per game average in the two games. She made 89.5 percent of her free throws and made 56.5 percent of her shots from the field. Sharale McCormick, who just surpassed the 1,000-point plateau, averaged 12.0 ppg while Dane Bertolina averaged 10.5 points, 4.5 rebounds, and 2.5 assists. Maddie Erickson averaged a team-high 6.5 rebounds per game. Jashanti Simmons led four different Lady 'Canes in double-figure scoring with a 17.5 points per game average. She also grabbed 5.5 rebounds per game and made 52 percent of her shots from the field. Ndidiamaka Ndukwe averaged 13.5 points and 6.5 rebounds per game. Kori Tomlin had an average of 14.0 points and 3.0 assists per game. Leah Johnson averaged 10.5 points, 8.0 rebounds per game, and 2.0 blocks per game.

McClendon leads the Saints with a 16.3 points per game average this season. Her 173 free throws made ranks fourth in the nation and her 89.6 percent mark from the charity stripe is ninth in the country. McClendon is third in the PBC in scoring average and leads the league in free throw percentage. McCormick is averaging 14.0 points and 5.2 rebounds per game. She is seventh in the conference in scoring average and second in free throw percentage (85.3). Bertolina is third in the PBC in rebounding (8.2), and fifth in three-pointers made per game (1.8) and steals per game (3.7). Se'Lah Reddick is third in assists per game (3.9).

Johnson is fourth in the PBC in rebounding (8.2) and leads the league in blocked shots per game (2.1) for Georgia Southwestern. Simmons is sixth in steals per game (1.9). The Lady 'Canes boast the best offense (79.5) and defense (55.8) in the conference.

This will be Flagler's seventh appearance at the Peach Belt Conference Tournament. The Saints are 1-6 in the tournament and advanced to the semifinal round in 2013. The Lady 'Canes lead the all-time series 16-13. The last time the Saints left Americus with a win was Dec. 13, 2020 (82-78).
