Saints fall to a late surge by the Bearcats

ST. AUGUSTINE – Flagler College held a 56-47 lead with 4:33 left to go in the game but Lander University rallied thanks to a 16-3 run to close the game and win 63-59 n a Peach Belt Conference women's basketball game Wednesday evening at Flagler Gym.

Flagler is now 11-16 overall and 6-11 in the Peach Belt with one game remaining in the regular season. The Saints are tied for seventh place with Georgia College & State University, but lose the tiebreaker as they have lost twice to the Bobcats. The Saints will host No. 20 (WBCA Division II Top 25) Georgia Southwestern State University, who just clinched at least a share or the regular season title tonight, on Saturday at 1:30 p.m. Lander improved to 17-10 overall and 10-7 in league play. The Bearcats sit in fourth place with one game left.

A Dane Bertolina basket at the 4:33 mark of the fourth quarter was the last basket the Saints would score. In the last two-plus minutes, the Bearcats went on a 12-1 run. Lander would not trail again after a Taniya Gordon layup with 49 seconds to go. Destiny McClendon made the first of two free throw attempts to tie the game at 59, but Wykira Johnson-Kelly's layup with 34 seconds put the Bearcats on top again, 61-59.

McClendon and Sharale McCormick led Flagler as each scored 16 points. Bertolina finished with seven points, a team-high nine rebounds, three assists, and two steals.

Johnson-Kelly scored a game-high 18 points for the Bearcats.
