Saints give No. 20 Lady ‘Canes all they could handle in regular season finale

ST. AUGUSTINE – Flagler College held a 42-39 lead at the half but No. 20 (WBCA Division II Top 25) Georgia Southwestern State University used a 20-5 run in the second half to pull away for an 80-64 win in a Peach Belt Conference women's basketball game Saturday afternoon at Flagler Gymnasium.

Flagler ends its regular season with an 11-17 overall record and a 6-12 mark in the Peach Belt. The Saints will be the No. 8 seed in next week's PBC Tournament at Americus, Georgia. Georgia Southwestern improved to 23-3 overall and 16-2 in conference play. The Lady 'Canes won the regular season title outright and will host the PBC Tournament and be the No. 1 seed. Both teams will face each other in a quarterfinal game on Thursday. The times will be determined on Monday.

A pair of Destiny McClendon free throws with 7:57 left in the game trimmed the Flagler deficit to two (55-53). Georgia Southwestern scored the next 10 points, which led to a 20-5 run over a five-minute span.

Sharale McCormick scored a team-high 19 points and added four assists as well as three steals for Flagler. McClendon added 18 points and seven rebounds. Amuk Tong contributed 10 points in her final home game on "Senior Day." Fellow senior Beka Benge finished with three points.

The Saints shot 57.7 percent from the floor in the first half, which included a 60 percent mark in the first quarter.

Kori Tomlin scored a team-high 20 points to lead Georgia Southwestern. She made four of the team's nine three-pointers. Jashanti Simmons came off the bench to add 17 points, seven rebounds, and four assists. Kayla Langley and Ndidiamaka Ndukwe contributed 13 and 12 points, respectively.
