WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. –
Matthew Burke collected a career-high four hits to pace the Flagler College offense but Palm Beach Atlantic University used a three-run eighth inning to rally to a 5-4 win in a non-conference baseball game Tuesday night at J.M "Jake" Rubin Park.
Palm Beach Atlantic improved to 4-9 while Flagler dropped to 6-9. The Saints continue on the road for a three-game weekend series against Lander University to open Peach Belt Conference play.
The Saints held a 3-2 lead going into the bottom of the eighth. Ben Green drew a leadoff walk and Matthew Faranda followed with a single to right field. Nate Housen dropped down a sacrifice bunt that was fielded by Flagler relief pitcher
Justin Haskins (0-1). His throw to first base was wide of the bag and the ball went down the line allowing both runners to score and Housen advanced to second base. Housen later scored on a single by Giancarlo Chantres to give the Sailfish a 5-3 lead.
Flagler had its chance in the top of the ninth.
Taylor Clapp led off with a single to left field and
Kevin RisCassi ripped a double into the left field corner to score Clapp. A balk moved RisCassi to third. Pinch hitter Payton Palldino drew a walk to put runners on the corners.
Will Taylor came in to pinch run for Palladino. PBA turned to Jimmie Buhl to stop the Saints rally. Taylor stole second base and Burke was issued a free pass after an out was recorded. Buhl struck out the next two batters to end the game.
RisCassi finished 2-for-5 with the double, two runs batted in, and he scored a run for Flagler.
Trey Newland collected two singles.
Haskins took the loss in relief after allowing three unearned runs on two hits in 1.2 innings.
Isaiah Wellman started and struck out a season-high seven batters.
Faranda had two of PBA's four hits, both singles. He scored a run and drove in another.
Gavin Ingram (1-0) got the win in relief as he allowed one run on two hits in two-thirds of an inning. Buhl picked his first save.
