Smith and Maseda’s home runs are not enough for Saints

GREENWOOD, S.C. – The Flagler College softball team fell in their final two games of the Bearcat/Fleet Invitational on Saturday at Doug Spears Field. The Saints lost to #16 Wingate University 7-2 and Young Harris College 7-4.

The first game was scoreless until the bottom of the fourth when Mackenzie Smith earned her third home run of the weekend, scoring herself and Cassidy Crump. Wingate retaliated and added five runs on three hits in the top if the fifth. The Bulldogs added two more runs in the top of the sixth. The game ended with Wingate taking the win 7-2.

Raechel Cutcher earned the win for the Bulldogs. Madelyn Wise (2-1) got the loss for the Saints after pitching four innings.

In game two, Young Harris took the early lead, scoring three runs in the bottom of the third. Back-to-back home runs earned those runs for the Mountain Lions. Mackenzie Smith tabbed her fourth home run of the weekend to earn the first run for the Saints in the top of the second.

The Saints tied up the game in the top of the third. Paige Maseda started it off with a home run to right center for the first at bat of the inning. Sydney Stewart and Emily Ricci both singled to get on base with no outs for Flagler. Crump drew a walk to make it bases loaded with one out and Kyla Knier on deck. A fielder's choice allowed Knier to reach first and bring in Stewart for the tying run at 3-3.

Young Harris added their fourth run in the top of the third, but Flagler was quick to tie it back up in the top if the fourth. Maseda sent another ball over the fence for her second home run of the game making it 4-4.

The final runs of the game came in the bottom of the fifth with three runs scored for Young Harris.

Emma Black earned the win for Young Harris. Jordan Sheets got the loss for the Saints after pitching 2.2 innings.

The Saints will return home for a doubleheader against Valdosta State University on Feb. 21 at Flagler Field.
