Saints advance with a sweep

WINGATE, N.C. – Jordan Berglin finished with a match-high 14 kills to lead No. 3-seed Flagler College to a sweep (25-21, 26-24, 25-19) of No. 6-seed Anderson University Friday afternoon in a quarterfinal match of the NCAA Division II Southeast Regional at the Cuddy Arena and Thomas Koontz Family Court.

Flagler has won 10-of-its-last-11 matches and improved to 15-10. The Saints will face Peach Belt Conference rival Lander University in a semifinal match tomorrow at 4 p.m. Anderson's season came to an end with a 19-11 record.

Berglin hit .379 as she only had three errors on 29 swings. She also had seven digs. Molly Boyd added nine kills and four total blocks. Colby Stempkowski posted her third-consecutive .500 or better hitting percentage as she finished with seven kills and had one error on 10 swings for a .600 mark. Amelia Fitzpatrick chipped in with five kills and digs while Cassidy Bloom tacked on four kills and nine digs. Clare Sheedy tallied a match-high 33 assists while Lexi Basler collected a match-high 10 digs.

The Saints hit an efficient .304 with 40 kills and had 12 errors on 92 swings. The Trojans were held to a .182 hitting percentage with 38 kills and 20 errors on 99 swings.

Ava Reeves led Anderson with 13 kills and hit .360. Karley Black added eight kills. Ellie Nieporte tallied 29 assists and collected eight digs. Libby Nieporte and Katy Smith each finished with nine digs.

Flagler led for the majority of the first set and withstood a rally by Anderson. Black had back-to-back kills to bring the Trojans to within one point (21-20), but a pair of miscues by Anderson and a kill by Fitzpatrick brought about set point. Sheedy had 11 assists on Flagler's 15 kills.

The second set saw 12 ties and four lead changes. A kill by Bloom gave Flagler set point (24-22), but a service error and a kill by Reeves tied the set at 24-all. Boyd finished off the set with a solo block and an ace. Berglin had seven kills and hit .462.

The Trojans took a 14-13 lead in the third set after a kill by Reeves. Fitzpatrick's kill ignited a 3-0 spurt by the Saints and they never trailed again. Anderson struggled with a -.036 hitting percentage, and consecutive hitting errors helped Flagler in that spurt.
