ANDERSON, S.C. –
Destiny McClendon and
Jessica Dowdy each scored 16 points but Flagler College fell short in an 80-73 loss to the University of Virginia's College at Wise in a non-conference women's basketball game at the Southeast Region Crossover Saturday at the Abney Athletic Center.
Flagler is now 1-1 on the season and will open its home schedule on Wednesday against Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University at 6 p.m. UVA Wise improved to 2-0.
Jazmine Major added 15 points, eight rebounds, and four assists for the Saints.
Marley Smith chipped in with 12 points.
Sable Burnside recorded a double-double and had game-highs in points with 28 and rebounds with 15 for the Highland Cavaliers. She also had five blocked shots. Katlin Burger added 18 points and seven rebounds while Makenzie Bremer finished with 10 points.
UVA Wise scored the game's first six points and never looked back. A Dowdy three-pointer with 1:48 left in the first quarter got Flagler to within a point (14-13). Over the next five minutes, UVA Wise went on an 18-5 and held a double-digit lead until the last 1:47 of the game.
