ST. AUGUSTINE –
Jordan Berglin and
Molly Boyd each finished with 13 kills as Flagler College lost its regular season finale to Lander University 3-1 (25-22, 22-25, 25-18, 25-13) and a Peach Belt Conference volleyball match Friday night at Flagler Gym.
Lander won its fifth match in a row to improve to 20-4 overall and 7-1 in the Peach Belt. The Bearcats won the regular season title with the victory and will go on to host the PBC Tournament, Nov. 22-23, at Greenwood, South Carolina. The Saints had their seven-match winning streak snapped and dropped to 12-10 overall and 5-3 in the PBC. Flagler will be the No. 2 seed in the tournament and will face USC Aiken in a semifinal match.
Berglin recorded her ninth double-double of the season as she added 12 digs to her line. She hit an efficient .310 with only four errors on 29 swings.
Cassidy Bloom and
Amelia Fitzpatrick stood out as well with seven kills each.
Clare Sheedy tallied 40 assists and had nine digs.
Lexi Basler collected 12 digs while
Amelia Fitzpatrick tacked on 11 more.
For the Bearcats, Katie Miller recorded a match-high 26 kills and rounded out the double-double with 11 digs. She finished with a .500 hitting percentage with four errors on 44 swings. Madde Blake added 11 kills and seven digs. Blondie Penaflor also aided the effort with nine kills and four total blocks.
Both teams hit .294 in the first set. With the scored tied at 17, Lander used a 4-0 spurt to pull away. A service error by Flagler, coupled with a pair of kills by Miller, and an ace by Lauren Dow produced the Bearcat run. Lander won the set, 25-22.
Flagler was on fire in the second set hitting a whopping .500 with 17 kills on one error on 32 swings. Boyd alone had seven kills and hit .545. The Saints trailed 12-6 early, but stormed back to take a 16-15 lead after a pair of aces by Boyd. A kill by Boyd broke up a 21-all tie and the Saints never trailed again, winning 25-22.
Flagler led early in the third set, but Lander rallied and won 25-18. Miller finished with 11 kills and hit .733 with 15 errorless swings. Berglin followed suit for the Saints with a .700 mark as she had seven kills on 10 errorless swings.
The Bearcats opened the fourth set on a 7-3 run and never looked back. Miller recorded seven kills in the set.
