Berglin leads offense as Flagler flies past Lewis

ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – Jordan Berglin recorded her seventh double-double of the season with a match-high 22 kills to go along with 11 digs in Flagler College's 3-1 (27-25, 18-25, 25-23, 25-22) victory over Lewis University Wednesday night at the Neil Carey Arena.

Flagler extended its winning streak to five and improved its overall record to 10-9. Lewis had its three-match winning streak snapped and dropped to 15-8. The Saints play Missouri University of Science & Technology tomorrow at 1 p.m. to complete the two-match swing in Romeoville.

Molly Boyd, who hails from Chicago, which is a stone's throw away from Romeoville, finished with 11 kills and had only two errors on 23 swings for a .391 hitting percentage in her homecoming. She added five total blocks to her line. Cassidy Bloom notched her third double-double of the season with 11 kills and 15 digs. Amelia Fitzpatrick tacked on eight kills and 14 digs. Clare Sheedy tallied a match-high 52 assists and added 11 digs for her eighth double-double of the year. Lexi Basler collected a season-high 31 digs and had some revenge on a former rival as she played for fellow Great Lakes Valley Conference member Drury University the previous three seasons.

Bella Ray and Hannah Alvey each recorded 12 kills for the Flyers. Alvey completed the double-double with 11 digs. Lily King finished with a double-double as she tallied 26 assists and 10 digs. Natalie Stefanski and Ally Hickey had 22 digs apiece.

The first set saw eight ties and two lead changes. Flagler had set point (24-23), but a service error tied the score. After a kill by Boyd set up a second set point for the Saints, the Flyers broke it thanks to a kill by Molly Januski. However, Berglin finished off the set with back-to-back kills. She finished with six kills in the set.

Flagler and Lewis had seven ties and three lead changes in the second set. The Flyers used a 5-0 run to wipe out a 10-8 lead by the Saints and they never trailed again. Lauren Buxton had six kills and Ray added five more.

The Saints used a 4-0 run to rally back from a 17-15 deficit. Lewis tied the score at 22 after an ace by Alvey, but her service error to start the next rally gave Flagler a 23-22 lead. An ace by Sheedy and a kill by Gracie Fleming closed the set and gave Flagler a 2-1 lead in the match.

Flagler and Lewis were tied 10 times and exchanged leads four times in the fourth set. After the Flyers tied the score at 19 that forced a Saints timeout, Berglin's spike coming out of the break gave Flagler the lead for good, 20-19. It started a run of four consecutive kills by Berglin. She had nine kills in the final set and hit .400 as she had one error on 20 swings.
