Saints finish strong against Bobcats

ST. AUGUSTINE – Molly Boyd, Colby Stempkowski, and Jordan Berglin helped lead the offense as Flagler College defeated Georgia College & State University 3-1 (26-28, 25-11, 25-16, 25-18) in a Peach Belt Conference volleyball match Friday afternoon at Flagler Gym as the Saints promoted breast cancer awareness with a Dig Pink match.

Flagler swept the season series against Georgia College and improved to 6-9 overall and 2-2 in the Peach Belt. Georgia College lost its fifth match in a row and fell to 7-11 overall and 0-4 in conference play. Flagler hosts Augusta University tomorrow at 1 p.m.

Boyd recorded a match-high 15 kills and hit .583 with one error on 24 swings. She added three total blocks. Stempkowski added 11 kills and five total blocks. Berglin finished with 10 kills and five total blocks. Clare Sheedy tallied 39 assists, had a season-high five aces, and tacked on two total blocks. Lexi Basler led the defense with 20 digs while Amelia Fitzpatrick added 12, and Cassidy Bloom supplied 10 more.

Sarah Pipping led the Bobcats with 11 kills while Brooke Roberts had five total blocks.

The first set saw 11 ties and four lead changes. The Saints led 24-23, but the Bobcats fought off set point on a Camryn Carlton kill. An ace by Pipping gave Georgia College a 25-24 lead. After a Flagler timeout, each team had a service error. Boyd's kill knotted the score at 26-all, but a kill by Sadie Patterson and a Saints attack error gave the opening set to the Bobcats.

Flagler cruised in the second set and limited GCSU to a -.079 hitting percentage. Berglin had three kills on five errorless swings for a .600 hitting percentage.

The Bobcats struggles continued in the third set as they hit -.091. Flagler went on a 6-0 run to break up a 3-all tie and four of those points came on GCSU hitting errors.

A 9-3 spurt in the fourth set helped the Saints pull away. A Stempkowski kill helped spark the run. She had four kills in the set and Boyd was perfect as she had five kills in as many swings. Basler collected six digs.
