Saints downed in five at Lander

GREENWOOD, S.C.- Jordan Berglin recorded a career high 24 kills but it wasn't enough as Flagler College lost 3-2 (23-25, 27-25, 27-29, 25-16, 15-11) to Lander University in a Peach Belt Conference volleyball match Saturday night at Finis Horne Arena.

Flagler fell to 5-9 on the season and 1-2 in the Peach Belt. Lander improved to 9-3 overall and 1-0 in conference play. The Saints return home for a PBC contest with Georgia College & State University at 3 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 18.

After the Bearcats took the fourth set to even the match, they scored four-of-the-last-five points to take the set 15-11. A Berglin kill brought the Saints to within two (12-10), but the Bearcats got a kill from Katie Miller along with a couple Flagler hitting errors to wrap up the game. Miller had five-of-the-eight kills in that set for Lander. Blondie Penaflor added four total blocks. Berglin led the Saints with four kills, but Flagler wound up with a .000 hitting percentage with six kills and six errors on 23 swings.

Three Saints hit double figures against the Bearcats. Molly Boyd had 14 kills and Amelia Fitzpatrick rounded out the double-digit hitters with a career high 11 kills. Clare Sheedy had her sixth double-double of the season, and third in a row, with a season high 53 assists and 10 digs.

On defense, Flagler had three players with double-digit digs. Lexi Basler led the effort breaking her season high with 25 digs. Ella Wicker rounded out the dig leaders with 10 of her own. Berglin and Colby Stempkowski each had three total blocks.

For the Bearcats, Miller led the offense with 23 kills and added 13 digs to go along with seven total blocks. She hit .436 with only six errors on 39 swings. Lauren Dow finished with a double as she tallied 44 assists and 20 digs. Penaflor recorded 13 total blocks.
