GREENWOOD, S.C. –
Sharale McCormick and
Destiny McClendon combined to scored 32 points as Flagler College edged Lander University 60-57 in a Peach Belt Conference women's basketball game Wednesday evening at the Finis Horne Arena.
Flagler improved to 9-10 overall and 4-5 in the Peach Belt. Lander lost its second game in a row and dropped to 14-5 overall and 7-2 in conference play. The loss snapped the Bearcats four-game home winning streak. Flagler heads to Dahlonega, Georgia to take the University of North Georgia on Saturday.
Lander held its largest lead, 51-40, at the end of the third quarter. Flagler opened the fourth quarter on a 17-2 burst that helped it gain a 57-53 lead with 49 seconds left in the game. McCormick accounted for seven points in that stretch and her basket with 1:54 left to go tied the game at 53.
The Bearcats had their chances to tie the game under a minute to go, but the shots would not fall. They shot an ice-cold 12.5 percent (2-for-16) from the field in the final quarter.
McClendon and McCormick each scored 16 points for the Saints.
Dane Bertolina grabbed a game-high 13 rebounds and blocked three shots.
Maddie Erickson added five points and eight rebounds.
Flagler shot 44.4 percent (8-of-18) from the field in the final 10 minutes. For the game, the Saints made 85.7 percent (18-of-21) of their free throws, including making 17 in a row.
Wykira Johnson-Kelly led the Bearcats with a game-high 22 points and she added nine rebounds. Tanyia Gordon added 12 points and six boards.
