McClendon pours in 29 points in PBC opener

AMERICUS, Ga. – Destiny McClendon tied her season-high with 29 points, but Flagler College lost its Peach Belt Conference women's basketball opener to Georgia Southwestern State University 87-68 Wednesday evening at The Storm Dome.

The Lady Hurricanes won their seventh game in a row and improved to 8-1 overall. Flagler is now 5-6. The Saints host the University of North Georgia on Saturday at 1:30 p.m.

McClendon scored 20 of her game-high 29 points in the first half. She was a perfect 7-for-7 from the field and made all three of her 3-point attempts. That helped the Saints trail by just seven (41-34) at the half.

Georgia Southwestern used a 13-2 run in the fourth quarter to sprint past Flagler. Kayhla Adams sank a trey with 6:24 left in the game to spark the run. She scored eight of those 13 points and capped the run with a basket with 3:55 left to give the Lady Canes an 82-62 lead.

Dane Bertolina added 13 points and eight rebounds for the Saints. Se'Lah Reddick added 10 points and five assists. Maddie Erickson grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds.

Jashanti Simmons led five GSW players in double-figures with 18 points. Ndidiamaka Ndukwe added 15 points and nine rebounds. Leah Johnson contributed 15 points, eight rebounds, five assists, and blocked four shots coming off the bench. Lexi McCully and Adams tacked on 13 and 11 points, respectively.
