ST. AUGUSTINE –
Sharale McCormick scored a game-high 21 points and added five rebounds to help Flagler College defeat Clayton State University 74-62 in a Peach Belt Conference women's basketball game Saturday afternoon at Flagler Gymnasium.
Flagler improved its record to 7-9 overall and 2-4 in the Peach Belt. The win also snapped a four-game losing streak to the Lakers. Clayton State dropped to 4-11 overall and 2-4 in conference play. The Lakers have lost three-of-their-last-four games. Flagler hits the road to take on Columbus State University on Wednesday.
McCormick was one of three Flagler players to score in double figures.
Destiny McClendon added 16 points while
Dane Bertolina finished with 13 points, eight rebounds, and five assists.
The Saints trailed for most of the first quarter and half of the second quarter, but
Jessica Dowdy's three-pointer with 4:49 left in the half gave Flagler a 29-27 lead. The Saints never trailed again.
A brief 10-0 spurt that ended the first half and spilled over into the early stages of the third quarter put the game away. Bertolina and McClendon each sank a three-pointer while McCormick added a basket and
Lina Kouchis made a pair of free throws.
Se'Lah Reddick dished out a season-high nine assists and she added eight rebounds for Flagler.
In the third quarter, Flagler made 66.7 percent (8-12) of its shots from the field. The Saints also sank 21 free throws with McCormick accounting for seven and McClendon made all six of her attempts.
Deborrah Redmon led the Lakers with 13 points and seven rebounds. Jadah White and Devyne Turner each accounted for 12 points.
NOTE: The last time Flagler defeated Clayton State in St. Augustine was Jan. 4, 2014 (74-63) when the Lakers were ranked No. 7 in the country.
