ST. AUGUSTINE –
Sharale McCormick scored a season-high 28 points and added 10 rebounds for her first double-double of the season but it wasn't enough as Flagler College lost to Augusta University 66-58 in a Peach Belt Conference women's basketball game Wednesday evening at Flagler Gymnasium.
Augusta won its seventh game in a row to improve to 11-4 overall and 5-0 in the Peach Belt. The Jaguars are a perfect 8-0 away from home. Flagler is now 6-9 overall and 1-4 in conference play. The Saints host Clayton State University on Saturday (Jan. 20) at 1:30 p.m.
The Saints had a strong first quarter as they led by as many as 10 (20-10) and took a 20-12 lead at the first intermission. However, the Jaguars chipped away in the second quarter and used a 7-0 run to close out the half and it was all tied at 28.
A 9-1 run by Augusta midway through the third quarter wiped out a 35-32 lead by Flagler. A pair of baskets by Kalen Surles and Autumn Phillips ignited the Jags run and they never trailed again.
McCormick made a career-best 13 free throws on 14 attempts. Her 13 made free throws tied a NCAA Division II era record as Williesha "Shorty" Spencer made the same amount at the University of Central Florida (Dec. 7, 2013).
Destiny McClendon added 10 points for the Saints.
Dane Bertolina grabbed a team-high 12 rebounds and tacked on seven points.
Tomiyah Alford led the Jaguars with 16 points and six rebounds. Phillips contributed 15 points while Kennedi Manning recorded a double-double with 14 points and a game-high 13 rebounds.
