ST. AUGUSTINE – The Flagler College volleyball team earned their first conference win Friday night against USC Aiken in a five set thriller (25-18, 19-25, 25-15, 16-25, 15-12) at Flagler Gymnasium.
The Saints posted 50 kills, 10 aces, 9 blocks and 55 digs as a team. Junior
Jordan Berglin led Flagler with 19 kills and a .395 hitting percentage. Another big asset for the Saints was junior
Molly Boyd. The middle hitter had 6 kills, 6 blocks and hit .364, while
Cecilia Robert added 15 kills and hit .250 on the outside.
Freshman
Amelia Fitzpatrick had a showing, setting and hitting, earning 3 kills and 25 assists.
Lainee Mack added 17 assists, while
Dani Russo had 4 out of the 10 service aces for Flagler.
Edie Lamoreaux played strong defense, digging up 18 balls and picking up multiple dump attempts from the Pacers setter, but she also added 3 service aces to help the Saints in their victory.
The Saints took an early lead in set one, but it quickly became a close set with lots of back-and-forth play. The Pacers were closing in, trailing by two at 20-18, but a kill from
Molly Boyd brought on a five point run to end the set, in favor of the Saints. Set two saw Aiken in the lead for most of the set, allowing them to take it 25-19.
Flagler was down by two points at the beginning of set three until
Dani Russo went on a 10 point service run, with two aces, putting the Saints at an 8 point lead. The momentum stayed with Flagler as they took set three 25-15. Eventually, the match came down to a close set five, but the Saints came out victorious after a hard fight.
Lexi Rogers posted a double-double for the Pacers with 14 kills and 13 digs.
Flagler improved to 3-11 overall and 1-2 in the Peach Belt. USC Aiken is now 9-4 overall and 0-3 in league play.
Flagler will face USC Aiken again tomorrow at 3 p.m. at Flagler Gymnasium.
