Palm Beach Atlantic defeats Flagler in season opener

ST. AUGUSTINE – Four different players scored to lead Palm Beach Atlantic University to a 4-1 win over Flagler College in a mutual men's soccer season-opening match Saturday night at Saints Field.

The Sailfish got on the board in a hurry when Harry Gardner buried a shot in the top left corner of the goal in the 2nd minute. Orion McHugh was in the right place at the right time to blast a loose ball into the back of the net in the 38th minute.

Palm Beach Atlantic added two more goals in the second half before Max Gottwald converted a penalty kick in the 88th minute. Filip Sparavec drew the foul in the box to set up the penalty attempt. That was Gottwald's first collegiate goal.

Kevin Harr recorded one save for Flagler while Salvador Plaza finished with five saves for PBA.

Flagler out-shot PBA 16-9 and had a 5-3 advantage in corner kicks.

Up next for Flagler is a match against long-time rival, Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, on Tuesday at 6 p.m. at Saints Field.
