PENSACOLA, Fla. – The Flagler volleyball team started the UWF Invitational with two losses but put up a hard fight against host No. 17 University of West Florida (AVCA) in the second match on Friday. The Saints fell in three sets to No. 23 Lewis University (AVCA) (11-25, 14-25, 21-25) and ended with a tough five-set loss to University of West (17-25, 16-25, 27-25, 25-23, 8-15).
In the first match, junior
Jordan Berglin led the saints with 8 kills. Junior
Colby Stempkowski posted 4 kills, 2 aces and a block.
Amelia Fitzpatrick led the Saints with 11 assists and
Edie Lamoreaux dug up 8 balls. Freshman
Lainee Mack also added a service ace for Flagler.
Megan Schlechte led the Flyers with 13 kills and 3 aces. Lauren Stenman posted 27 assists and Ally Hickey led with 11 digs.
In the nightcap, Flagler fell behind early in sets one and two before making a strong comeback to take sets three and four. The Saints fell in a hard fought fifth set. Junior
Cecilia Robert led with 16 kills and a .205 hitting percentage.
Molly Boyd added strong play for Flagler with 11 kills and an impressive .563 hitting percentage, she also aided the defense with 6 blocks. Berglin added 13 kills and 4 blocks, while Lamoreaux dug up 22 balls and Fitzpatrick earned 30 assists. Freshman
Bennett Daniels made her collegiate debut with 3 blocks and an assist.
As a team, the Saints posted 55 kills, 56 digs and 13 blocks, beating the Argonauts out in all three categories.
Jenna Zydlo led the Argonauts with 16 kills and Avery Rodgers was right behind her with 13 kills. There were four Argonauts who each posted 2 service aces, adding to the 11 total for the team.
Flagler will face Spring Hill College at 11:30 a.m. and Charleston at 4:30 p.m. tomorrow for the final day of the UWF Invitational.
