Saints downed by Lakers

MORROW, Ga. – A penalty kick in the 26th minute was all that Clayton State University needed to edge Flagler College 2-0 in a Peach Belt Conference men's soccer match Saturday afternoon at Laker Field.

Clayton State improved to 5-1-0 overall and 2-0-0 in conference play. Flagler is now 1-3-1 and 1-1 in the Peach Belt.

Geo Rios gave the Lakers a 1-0 lead after converting a penalty attempt in the 26th minute.

Clayton State added an insurance goal, by Alexis Iturria, in the 88th minute with Rios assisting on the shot.

Flagler had four different players with one shot on frame. Toby McCalllum and Marcus Hedemann each had two shots in the match.

Iturria had nine shots for the Lakers with four being on target.

Mauricio Uribe collected four saves for Clayton State. Kevin Harr stopped seven shots for Flagler.

The Lakers outshot the Saints 24-9 and held an 8-3 advantage in corner kicks. Flagler finished with 22 fouls while Clayton State had 15 more. The Saints were booked with five yellow cards and the Lakers had four.

Flagler hosts Lander University on Wednesday (Sept. 20) at Saints Field at 3 p.m.
