LAKELAND, Fla. – Flagler College fell to No. 17 (AVCA Division II Top 25) Washburn University in five sets (23-25, 19-25, 27-25, 27-15, 11-15) and No. 6 Barry University in four sets (21-25, 25-27, 25-18, 16-25) on the first day of the FSC Volleyball Classic in Jenkins Field House on Friday.
In the opener, Flagler fell behind 2-0 but came back to push Washburn to a close five set match with two sets going into extra points. The team posted 57 kills, 17 blocks and 6 service aces, beating Washburn out in blocks and aces.
Colby Stempkowski,
Jordan Berglin and
Molly Boyd led the offensive with an even stretch of kills. Stempkowski led with 13, Berglin with 12 and Boyd finished it off with 11 kills. Boyd and Stempkowski finished their impressive showing with above .400 hitting percentages, and Boyd added five total blocks.
A pair of freshmen made their debut in the setting position for the Saints.
Lainee Mack led the team with 27 assists and
Amelia Fitzpatrick followed with 16 assists.
Jaylyn Stevenson led the Ichabods with 20 kills and 17 digs.
In the nightcap, Diana Akopova led Barry with 29 kills to go along with 16 digs and 2 service aces.
Boyd finished with a .583 hitting percentage as she collected eight kills and one error on 12 swings. Berglin led the Saints with 18 kills and added a service ace, while Mack tallied 22 assists. The Saints hit .230 as a team and put up 10 total blocks to beat out Barry's .200 hitting percentage and 4 blocks.
Flagler will finish off the FSC Volleyball Classic tomorrow against host Florida Southern at 3 p.m.
