ST. AUGUSTINE – The No. 5 (ITA Division II Collegiate Tennis Rankings) Flagler College women's tennis team defeated No. 14 Georgia College & State University in the final match of the NCAA Division II Southeast Region No. 1 Tournament at the Flagler Tennis Center Tuesday afternoon.
Flagler won its seventh match in a row and improved to 20-4 this season. For the second consecutive season, the Saints will play in the NCAA Division II National Tournament Round of 16 in Orlando, Florida, May 12-16. Flagler has defeated GCSU in nine of the last 10 meetings, including the last five in a row. Georgia College's season ends at 20-5.
The Saints began the day by dominating doubles. The No. 18-ranked doubles team of
Luisa Hrda and
Dana Heimen rolled to a 6-2 win and then
Florencia Massardo Brain and
Nadja Meier won their match 6-3 to wrap up the team point.
Flagler worked hard to win the singles points.
Charlotta Buss won her match in straight sets, which was her sixth win in a row. No. 9
Nadja Meier extended her winning streak to 28 with a 6-1, 3-6, 6-3 victory at No. 2 to give the Saints a 3-0 lead. But the Bobcats won the next two singles matches at Nos. 5 and 1 to get back in to the team match. No. 67
Dana Heimen was able to clinch the match after dropping the first set 6-7(3) by winning the other two sets 6-0 and 6-4.
