ST. AUGUSTINE – The No. 5 (ITA Division II Collegiate Tennis Rankings) Flagler College women's tennis team rolled past No. 44 Wilmington University 4-0 in a Round of 16 match at the NCAA Division II National Tournament Friday afternoon at the USTA National Tennis Center.
Flagler won its eighth match in a row to improve to 21-4 this season. The Saints advance to the national quarterfinals where they will take on the winner of the Washburn University-Azusa Pacific University match which is in progress. Wilmington's season ends at 19-4.
"I was impressed with our ability to play efficiently today," said head coach Rod Puebla. "We didn't let the heat of the day or the magnitude of the match get to us."
The Saints had little trouble in earning the doubles point.
Florencia Massardo Brain and
Nadja Meier won their seventh match in a row with a 6-0 victory at No. 3. The No. 18-ranked tandem of
Dana Heimen and
Luisa Hrda extended their winning streak to eight with a 6-2 romp over Jess Purdy and Neus Ramos Moreno at No. 1.
Charlotta Buss pocketed the first singles win of the day with a straight sets win at No. 6. That was her seventh win in a row and improved her record to 15-1 at No. 6. Heimen, ranked No. 67 in the country, cruised to a 6-1, 6-2 win over Alva Norberg. Heimen raised her record to 16-3 at No. 3.
Laura Jipescu clinched the match with her 6-1, 6-2 triumph over Marley Trifunovic at No. 5.
