Flagler completes series sweep of USC Beaufort

ST. AUGUSTINE – Trey Newland sparked the Flagler College offense with three singles, three runs scored and three stolen bases in an 8-4 win over USC Beaufort in a Peach Belt Conference baseball game Sunday afternoon at Drysdale Field.

Flagler extended its winning streak to five games and improved to 11-21 overall as well as 7-11 in the Peach Belt. USC Beaufort suffered its fifth consecutive loss and dropped to 12-21 overall and 5-16 in conference play.

Down 4-1 going into the top of the sixth inning, the Sand Sharks pushed across three runs to tie the score.

In the home half of the sixth, Newland led off the inning with a single and stole second base while Donovan Garcia drew a walk. Matthew Burke bunted down the third base line where the USCB third baseman picked up the ball but his throw to first base got away allowing Newland to score. Garcia went to third and Burke scampered to second. Jaiden Warde ripped a single up the middle to plate both runs as the Saints increased their lead to 7-4.

Flagler used three more pitchers to keep USC Beaufort off the scoreboard.

Brad Vondruska (1-1) picked up the win in relief as he allowed one hit in one scoreless inning. Huston Wynne, Steven Reiss, and Gabriel Partridge each tossed one scoreless inning in relief.

Taylor Clapp collected three singles and had one run batted in. Donovan Garcia went 2-for-4 with a double, three RBI, and he scored two runs. Warde hit a single, a double, scored a run and knocked in two more. Griffin Garcia hit two single and scored a run.

Payton MacPherson (2-2) allowed two runs on three hits in 1.2 innings in relief in the loss.

Aiden Driscoll-Sadusky finished with four singles and scored a run for the Sand Sharks.
