GREENWOOD, S.C. – The Flagler College men's golf team finished in a tie for ninth place with a 10-over par 874 (296-287-291) at the Bearcat Classic, which wrapped this afternoon at the Greenwood Country Club (par 72; 6,800 yards).
Top-ranked Anderson University took home the team title with a 15-under 849 (283-275-291). The Trojans topped the 19-team field by four strokes. No. 31 Lander University, the host school, finished in second place with an 11-under 853. No. 11 Clayton State University finished in third place with a 6-under 858. No. 30 University of Findlay turned in a 5-under 859 to finish in fourth. No. 18 Barton College and Wingate University tied for fifth place with an even par 864.
There was a tie at the top of the 108-man leaderboard. Linus Jonsson of Lander and Nick Fleming of Wingate each shot a 9-under 207. Jonsson won the playoff on the first hole. There was a three-way tie for third place at 6-under.
Nic Whittaker led the Saints contingent with an even par 216 (71-71-74). He finished in a tie for 19
th place. Whittaker tied for fifth place for the most birdies in the tournament with 13. He birdied the No. 1 and 18 holes all three rounds and had a birdie on hole No. 17 twice.
Franco Piovano shot a 3-over 219 (75-74-70) to finish in a tie for 36
th place. He was one of 17 golfers to have an eagle in the tourney. Piovano did that in the first round on hole No. 1.
Joel Petersson finished in a logjam in 51
st place. He carded a 6-over 222 (76-72-74). Petersson tied for fourth place for the most pars in the field with 41.
Nic Eberhard also finished in a tie for 51
st place. His second round 2-under 70 tied his season-best round.
Trey Wilson vaulted up 19 spots thanks to today's 1-over 73. He shot an 8-over 224 (76-75-73).
Tomas Cavanagh played as an individual and shot a 16-over 232. His second round 1-over 73 is his best single-round score of the year.
Flagler will now set its sights on the Hargett Memorial Invitational at Monroe, North Carolina, which will be played March 20-21.
