ST. AUGUSTINE –
Gage Voorhees (1-2) tossed a complete game and fanned a season-best 11 batters as Flagler College defeated USC Beaufort 3-1 in a Peach Belt Conference baseball game Friday night at Drysdale Field.
Flagler won its third game in a row and improved to 9-21 overall and 5-11 in the Peach Belt. USC Beaufort lost its third game in a row and dropped to 12-19 overall and 5-14 in conference play.
Voorhees tossed 129 pitches in tonight's game as he scattered six hits and allowed one run. He retired 12 in a row early in the game and he set down 16 of the first 18 batters he faced. Voorhees induced 14 ground outs.
He got all the support he needed in the fifth inning when
Trey Newland hit a two-run single up the middle.
Donovan Garcia drove in the insurance run in the eighth inning.
Brandon Blume (2-4) was the hard-luck loser on the hill for the Sand Sharks. He also went the distance and allowed one earned run on five hits with a pair of walks and six strikeouts. He induced nine ground outs and eight more fly outs. Blume retired 14 of the first 17 batters he faced.
The lone tally for USC Beaufort came in the seventh inning. Julian Galassi hit a two-out double to right-center and then scored on Wesley Ambrose's base hit on the right field line.
Simms Owens collected a pair of singles and stole two bases for the Saints.
Donovan Garcia and
Matthew Burke had the other two hits for Flagler.
Hunter Miller, Aiden Driscoll-Sadusky, Josh Patterson, and Hunter McKown each hit a single for the Sand Sharks.
The same two teams meet tomorrow at 2 p.m.
