Villamil and Petersson finish in the top 10; Saints tie for fifth place

MONROE, N.C. – The Flagler College men's golf team finished in a tie for fifth place with a 25-over par 889 (302-286-301) at the Hargett Memorial Invitational, which wrapped up Tuesday at the Rolling Hills Country Club (par 72; 6,764 yards).

The Saints had standout performances from Felix Villamil and Joel Petersson. Villamil shot a season-best 3-under 213 (75-67-71) and finished in a tie for fifth place, his second top five this year. He had a tournament-best three eagles, one in the first round and two in the second round, including a hole-in-one. Petersson turned in a season-best even par 216 (75-68-73) and finished in a tie for seventh place, his first top 10 finish.   

Finishing atop the 16-team field was No. 9 (Golfstat relative ranking) Grand Valley State University. The Lakers shot a 1-under 863 (292-285-286) and won by 19 strokes. Belmont Abbey College finished a distant second with an 18-over 882 (304-291-287).

Charles Delong of Grand Valley State shot a 4-under 68 in the final round to claim medalist honors with a 10-under 206 (69-69-68). Yesterday's leader through two rounds, Filippo Grossi of Wingate University finished in second place with a 5-under 211 (68-69-74).    

Nic Whittaker finished in a tie for 19th place with a 7-over 223 (75-70-78). Franco Piovano was one shot back with an 8-over 224 (78-71-75) and finished in a tie for 25th place. Nic Eberhard carded an 11-over 227 which put him in a tie for 38th place. Trey Wilson shot a 17-over 233 while Andrew Porter rounded out the Flagler players with a 22-over 238.

Flagler wraps up the regular season with the Argonaut Invitational, which will be held April 3-4, at the Pensacola CC in Pensacola, Florida.
