ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla.- A wild pitch secured Flagler College's 3-2 win and sweep against the University of South Carolina Beaufort in a Peach Belt Conference doubleheader Friday afternoon at Flagler Field.
At the bottom of the seventh, Flagler (11-15, 6-5 Peach Belt) came out strong with a single up the middle from
Ari Bosch.
Regan Miller grounded out to the pitcher, advancing Bosch to second.
Trinity Fry singled up the middle to plate Bosch, tying the game at 2-2.
In the eighth inning,
Rachel Hester kept the USC Beaufort (8-20, 1-10) at bay, securing a strikeout and two fly outs.
A single through the left side put
Madelyn Childs at first base.
Olivia Parker's single up the left side put pinch runner,
Courtney Robinson, at second base. A ground out from
Mackenzie Smith allowed the two runners to advance to third and second.
Ari Bosch reached first on a fielder's choice, forcing Robinson out at home. A wild pitch sealed the Sand Sharks fate and allowed Parker to score at 3-2.
Hester took the win after pitching all eight innings. The sophomore gave up seven hits, walked one batter and had five strikeouts. Hester induced 12 fly outs and six ground outs.
In game one, the Saints won 4-1.
Flagler secured all four runs during the first inning.
Paige Maseda opened the first by drawing a walk and stealing second. A single and a stolen base from
Abbey O'Connor put runners at first and second. A fielder's choice forced Maseda out at third and put
Cassidy Crump at first base.
Madelyn Childs and
Olivia Parker both connected on a single to plate O'Connor and Crump.
With the Saints up by two, Smith drew a walk. An error by Sand Sharks allowed both Childs and Parker to score, making it 4-0.
Jordan Sheets (6-4) secured the win after pitching seven innings, giving up six hits and walking one batter. The freshman had eight strikeouts and induced five fly outs and eight ground outs.
The Sand Sharks added their one run during the fifth inning.
Next, the Saints will host USC Beaufort on Saturday, March 18 for a single conference game.
