ST. AUGUSTINE –
Sharale McCormick had 13 points, six rebounds and three steals as Flagler College's upset bid came up short against No. 22 (WBCA Division II Top 25) Georgia Southwestern State University 66-55 in a Peach Belt Conference women's basketball game Wednesday evening at Flagler Gymnasium.
Georgia Southwestern snapped a two-game losing streak and improved to 18-4 overall and 10-3 in the Peach Belt. Flagler is now 6-17 overall and 3-10 in conference play.
After a
N'Mya Pierce basket got the Saints back to within two (42-40) late in the third quarter, Destiny Garrett made three layups in a row to spark an 11-0 run by the Lady 'Canes that put the game out of reach.
Flagler rallied the cut the score to six (55-49), but Georgia Southwestern answered with a 9-2 spurt late in the fourth quarter.
Pierce recorded her ninth double-double of the season, and second in a row, with 12 points and a game-high 11 rebounds.
Jessica Dowdy finished with 11 points, five assists and four steals.
Ava Jones led Georgia Southwestern with a game-high 21 points and added six rebounds. Kayla Langley finished with 13 points and eight rebounds while Garrett tacked on 13 points, six rebounds and four steals.
Flagler hosts USC Aiken on Saturday at 1:30 p.m. at Flagler Gymnasium.
