ST. AUGUSTINE – No. 3 (ITA Division II Collegiate Tennis Rankings) Saint Leo University edged No. 5 Flagler College 4-2 in a quarterfinal match of the ITA Division II National Indoor Championship Friday morning at the Ernest Grundy Tennis Center.
Saint Leo remains undefeated at 5-0 while Flagler is now 1-2.
The Saints could not lock up the doubles point after No. 10
Nadja Meier and
Dana Heimen won their match 6-3. A top 15 contest between No. 6
Luisa Hrda and
Eryka Kruk against No. 15 Marta Vicens Miquel and Lavinia Lancellotti came down to a tiebreaker and the duo from Saint Leo won 8-6. The Lions won No. 3 doubles to gain the team point.
Meier, ranked No. 13, won the first singles match to knot the team score at 1-all after a 6-3, 6-0 win over No. 7 Claudia Borbon Roca. With Flagler trailing 3-1,
Laura Jipescu won at No. 6 singles in straight sets, but Saint Leo clinched the match with a win at No. 3 singles.
Flagler will play the loser of the match that is currently underway between the University of Central Oklahoma and the University of North Georgia. That consolation match will be held tomorrow at 8 a.m. Central.
