ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla.- A home run from
Mackenzie Smith in the fourth inning spurred a 5-3 win over Barry University at Flagler Field in game one of a non-conference doubleheader on Wednesday.
Smith plated both
Mercedes Salinas and
Gianna Amundsen to take a 4-3 lead over the Buccaneers (9-4) at the bottom of the fourth.
Smith went 2-for-3, while Salinas went 1-for-2.
The Saints (3-4) added their last run after
Regan Miller grounded out to second base, allowing
Stephanie Youngblood to score.
Cassidy Crump put Flagler on the board with a single to left field to plate
Paige Maseda.
Maseda went 2-for-3 with a pair of singles during play.
Jordan Sheets pitched seven innings, scattering six hits and allowing three runs. The freshman induced seven fly outs with one strikeout.
In game two, Flagler (3-4) started the scoring early with a Crump single to the left side, batting in Maseda.
Madelyn Wise (0-3) took the loss for the Saints, pitching four innings and giving up six hits on four runs with four strikeouts.
Rachel Hester tossed three innings, giving up two hits and secured two strikeouts.
Barry tied the game, 1-1, with a single up the middle from Mac Stone-Folmar. A home run in the fourth inning and a double to left center, plating both Taylor Thompson and Harper Bunn concluded the scoring.
Next, the Saints will travel to Pensacola, Florida for a doubleheader against the University West Florida on Feb.18.
