Sheets blanks Tritons in first college start

ST. AUGUSTINE – Freshman Jordan Sheets made her first collegiate start and tossed a complete game shutout to lead Flagler College to a 3-0 win over Eckerd College in the second game of a doubleheader to conclude the Old Coast Classic Sunday afternoon at Flagler Field. Eckerd won the first game, 10-2.

Flagler is now 2-3 overall while Eckerd is 3-2. Up next for the Saints is a doubleheader against Barry University on Wednesday at 3 p.m. at Flagler Field.

Sheets (1-0) scattered three hits, walked two and struck out one to earn her first collegiate victory. She induced 14 ground outs and retired another six batters on fly outs. Sheets allowed six baserunners in the game and four reached scoring position.

She got all the run support she needed in the first, with the help of a pair of defensive miscues by the Tritons. Paige Maseda reached on a fielding error by the Eckerd first baseman, then stole second and took third on a groundout. Cassidy Crump dropped down a squeeze bunt just in front of the plate area. The Triton third baseman's throw was just off target at first base as she did not have a play at the plate.

The Saints got a pair of insurance runs in the fifth inning. Madison Vogel's groundball scored a run and Olivia Parker followed with a run-scoring double to left-center. Parker went led the Saints with two hits.

In the opener, Eckerd erupted for six runs in the first inning en route to a 10-2 win. The Tritons send 12 batters to the plate and had six hits, but the Saints made two errors and only one of the six runs were earned. Hannah Gordon and Jenice Casanas had back-to-back RBI infield singles.

Lauren Margolis socked a lead off home run in the top of the seventh inning for Eckerd.

The Saints plated two runs in the fifth. The first came on a wild pitch and later, Crump's single up the middle scored Maseda from third base.

Mercedes Salinas hit a double in the seventh inning for Flagler.

Madelyn Wise (0-2) went the distance and allowed five earned runs on 16 hits. She walked four and struck out five.

Ella Coiner collected four singles, drove in three runs and scored another for Eckerd. Casanas finished with three singles, two stolen bases, scored two runs and had one run batted in. Brenna Lokeinsky singled three times, scored a run and drove in another.
