ST. AUGUSTINE –
Destiny McClendon and
Jessica Dowdy combined for 50 points in Flagler College's 88-56 win over Southern Wesleyan University in a non-conference women's basketball game Tuesday night at Flagler Gymnasium.
Flagler improved to 4-3 overall while Southern Wesleyan dropped to 3-7. Up next for the Saints is Rollins College on Friday at 6 p.m. at Winter Park, Florida.
McClendon poured in a season-high 29 points while Dowdy eclipsed her previous career-high with 21 points. McClendon made 8-of-11 from the field, including 4-of-5 from 3-point range. Dowdy sank 7-of-13 from the field and made 6-of-12 from behind the arc.
Dane Bertolina just missed out on a triple-double as she scored 16 points, grabbed a game-high 13 rebounds, and dished out a season-best nine assists.
As a team, Flagler made a program-record 16 three-pointers. The previous record was 15 against Warner University, Jan. 29, 2008.
The Saints led 28-27 with 8:03 left in the second quarter. McClendon sank a pair of free throws to start a 23-8 run to close out the half. Flagler led at the break 51-35.
Flagler out-rebounded Southern Wesleyan 48-32.
Asia Pearly led Southern Wesleyan with 14 points. Taylin Smith added 10 more and made 7-of-8 from the free throw line.
