ST. AUGUSTINE –
Destiny McClendon scored a season-high 20 points but it wasn't enough as Saint Leo University rallied late to edge Flagler College 54-51 in a non-conference women's basketball game Saturday night at Flagler Gymnasium.
Flagler is now 2-2 and Saint Leo improved to 2-2. Flagler is back in action on Nov. 24 at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in the Bahama House Shootout.
The Saints led for nearly the entirety of the game, but the Lions scored the last seven points to rally for the win.
Alanis Diaz and Taydra Simpson made layups 41 seconds apart to tie the score at 51 with one minute left in regulation. Simpson was fouled on her layup and she sank the free throw to put the Lions on top 52-51.
Flagler turned the ball over with six seconds left and after two quick fouls by the Saints, Simpson stepped to the line and made both free throws. Flagler turned the ball over with one second left to end the game.
McClendon added five rebounds and four assists to her line for the Saints.
Maddie Erickson just missed a double-double with a career-high 13 rebounds and nine points.
Aspen Weeks chipped in with nine points.
Diaz led the Lions with 19 points.
