ST. AUGUSTINE –
Destiny McClendon and
Aspen Weeks each scored 15 points as Flagler College held off a late charge by Rollins College for a 65-62 win in a non-conference women's basketball game Wednesday night at Flagler Gymnasium.
Flagler improved to 2-1 on the season. It was the season opener for Rollins. The Saints host Saint Leo University on Saturday at 6 p.m.
The Saints got off to a fast start thanks to a 12-4 run at the end of the first quarter.
Sharale McCormick capped the run with a fastbreak layup to give Flagler a 20-10 lead. The Saints led after 10 minutes, 20-12.
The lead grew to as many as 15 (32-16) in the second frame after a three-pointer by
Jessica Dowdy. Flagler led at the half, 36-24.
The biggest lead for the Saints came in the second half. Weeks' layup with 3:02 left in the third put Flagler up 51-35.
McClendon sank two free throws with 8:18 left in the game to give Flagler a 58-46 lead.
Rollins closed the game on a 16-7 run, but fell one possession short of trying to tie the game after Lucy Leen's layup as time expired.
McClendon had the best shooting night from the free throw line of any Flagler player since Dec. 7, 2013 when Williesha "Shorty" Spencer made all 13 of her attempts at the University of Central Florida.
Weeks sank 6-of-her-8 shots from the field and
Dane Bertolina just missed a double-double with a game-high 15 rebounds to go along with nine points.
Maddie Erickson blocked a career-best five shots and grabbed nine rebounds.
Ajalon Gillard and Maddie Dillinger each scored 16 points for the Tars. Erin Leigh corralled a team-high eight rebounds.
