Saints sweep Bobcats to end regular season

MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. – The Flagler College volleyball team earned their final win of the regular season in a sweep against Georgia College and State University (25-21, 25-21, 25-22) on Saturday in the Centennial Center.

Gracie Fleming had a showing for the Saints, leading with 9 kills, hitting .400 and adding four blocks. The middles put in some strong work, Molly Boyd tabbed 8 kills, hit .438 and led with 5 blocks. Senior Edie Lamoreaux dug up 13 balls, leading for the defense, while putting in 3 service aces for Flagler. The freshman duo of Lainee Mack and Amelia Fitzpatrick shared the setting duties once again, Mack leading with 20 and Fitzpatrick with 12.

As a team, the Saints posted 37 kills, 37 digs, 10 blocks and 8 aces. The second set proved to be effective as the team hit .364, bumping the match hitting percentage to .204 as a team.

The first set started out close with seven tie points, but their was only one lead change and that was in favor of the Saints. A kill by Molly Boyd put Flagler ahead of the 6-6 tie, switching the momentum and allowing the Saints to take the next 10 out of 14 points. GCSU called a timeout while Flagler held the lead at 17-10, but the timeout pushed the Bobcats on a five point run. The set would have one final tie point at 19-19, but the Saints finished it off 25-21 with a kill by Gracie Fleming

Flagler continued their success in the second set, taking the early lead at 7-3 and then pushing it 12-9 after a big block from Jordan Berglin and Gracie Fleming. The set would go back and forth until point 20 play when the Saints took three straight points to make it 21-18. Flagler would end the set with three consecutive points, finishing it on an error from the Bobcats. Set three was much like the first two with a lot of even play. There were seven tie scores and five lead changes in the final set, but Gracie Fleming would do it for the Saints with another kill to end the match at 25-22.

Rachel Machovec posted a double-double for the Bobcats with 14 kills and 11 digs. Riese Johnson also tabbed a double-double, leading with 31 assists and following Machovec with 10 digs.

Flagler improved to 7-18 overall and 4-8 in the Peach Belt. Georgia College & State University is now 14-16 overall and 1-11 in league play.

The Saints will face the Bobcats to open the Peach Belt Conference Tournament on Nov. 14 in Flagler Gymnasium. #4 Flagler and #5 Georgia College & State University will face off to see who joins the top three seeds in Augusta, Ga. for the semifinal round.
