ST. AUGUSTINE – The Flagler College volleyball team swept Georgia College and State University 3-0 (25-16, 25-11, 25-21) on Friday night with 14 service aces to earn the first win on the weekend in Flagler Gymnasium.
Cecilia Robert led the Saints with 10 kills, hitting .474 on the night. The junior outside hitter also added 3 service aces out of the team's 14 total. Junior
Molly Boyd played a major role in tonight's win, hitting .500 with 5 kills and 7 blocks to aid the Flagler defense. Freshmen
Lainee Mack and
Amelia Fitzpatrick once again shared setting duties with 13 and 15 assists, respectively. Fitzpatrick had a day behind the service line, putting down 6 aces to fall right behind the individual match record of 7 aces in the Flagler volleyball record book.
The Saints came out strong in the first set, putting up a massive 10 point lead at 13-3. Flagler extended it to set point at 24-14, but GCSU held them for two points before the set finished 25-16 with a kill from
Jordan Berglin. Four straight service aces from Fitzpatrick started off the second set for the Saints, quickly building on their momentum they pushed to a 15-9 lead. A kill from Boyd started an eight point run for Flagler that could not be broken by a GCSU timeout. The Bobcats were able to steal one last point before a massive block from Fitzpatrick and Boyd ended set two with a big 25-11 win for the Saints. GCSU put up a fight in set three, even holding a lead, but five points in a row earned the match victory for Flagler.
As a team, the Saints posted 36 kills, 39 digs, 14 aces and 7 blocks. In the second set victory, the team hit an astounding .409 collectively.
Rachel Machovec led the Bobcats with 7 kills and 10 digs.
Flagler improved to 4-12 overall and 2-3 in the Peach Belt. Georgia College & State University is now 10-9 overall and 0-5 in league play.
Flagler will face Georgia College and State University again tomorrow at 2 p.m. for the Dig Pink match in Flagler Gymnasium.
