Big second quarter leads Flagler to a win over Lander

GREENWOOD, S.C. – Flagler College used a 20-8 second quarter en route to a 61-55 over Lander University in a Peach Belt Conference women's basketball game Saturday afternoon at Finis Horne Arena.

Flagler improved to 5-15 overall and 2-8 in the Peach Belt. It was the program's first win at Greenwood in a decade (Jan. 26, 2013) when the Saints won 60-58. The last time Flagler won in the series was Jan. 12, 2019, a 90-75 win at Flagler Gym. Lander dropped to 7-12 overall and 4-6 in conference play.

The Saints trailed 17-12 in the early stages of the second quarter, but Sharale McCormick's three-pointer started a 15-3 run by Flagler over the next 5:36 and never trailed again. McCormick scored a game-high 22 points and grabbed a team-high eight rebounds for the Saints.

Flagler took a 32-23 lead into the halftime break and had a 10-point lead in the third quarter.

The Bearcats rallied in the fourth quarter and trailed by one (56-55) after a Tanyia Gordon trey with three minutes left to go. That would be Lander's last field goal and points in the game. The Bearcats missed their last six shots from the field, and five of those were from three-point range.

Jessica Dowdy added a season-high 10 points and six rebounds for Flagler. N'Mya Pierce tacked on six points and seven rebounds while Buse Utku and Taylor Gardner each tallied five assists.

Jakiyah Parker and Quadaija Langley scored 18 points apiece for Lander. Cory Santoro added 10 points. Kayla Sanders grabbed a game-high nine rebounds.

Flagler hosts Georgia College & State University on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. at Flagler Gymnasium.

NOTE: Flagler made a season-high 10 three-pointers in the game and McCormick and Carleigh Grimm both made three.
