Five Saints earn academic all-conference honors

AUGUSTA, Ga. – Flagler College had five men's soccer players earn a spot on the Peach Belt Conference Team of Academic Distinction, which was released this morning by conference officials. Marc Birkelund, Jared Fuentes, Paul Hansen, Alex Nolgren and Miles Shanley were the honorees.

To be eligible for the All-Academic team, a student-athlete must 1) participate in at least half of his/her team's events and either be a starter or significant contributor; 2) achieved a 3.50 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) and 3) completed at least one full academic year at his or her current institution.

Fuentes, a junior midfielder, earned his third academic all-conference honor. He is a sport management major with a business administration minor. The De Leon Springs, Florida native, started 17 matches with 11 starts and scored one goal with one assist. He logged 999 minutes this past fall. Fuentes is a two-time PBC Presidential Honor Roll scholar and was a recipient of the Dd ADA award as a sophomore.

Birkelund, a sophomore forward, is an international business major at Flagler. The Højslev, Denmark native started all 17 matches he played in and scored one goal with two assists. Birkelund was a PBC Presidential Honor Roll Silver Scholar last year.

Hansen, a sophomore forward, is majoring in business administration at Flagler. The Regensburg, Germany native played all 17 matches with 15 starts. He was second on the team with 14 points as he scored six goals with two assists. Hansen earned PBC Presidential Honor Roll Silver Scholar.

Nolgren, a sophomore defender/midfielder, is a business administration major with a psychology minor. The Hörby, Sweden native played in 11 matches with nine starts and logged 822 minutes. He was a PBC Presidential Honor Roll Silver Scholar last year.  

Shanley, a sophomore midfielder, is a coastal environmental science major. The St. Augustine, Florida native started all 17 matches and scored two goals. He was a PBC Presidential Honor Roll Bronze Scholar as a freshman.

Flagler finished with a 10-4-3 overall record and an 8-2-2 mark in conference play. The Saints advanced to the PBC Tournament championship match.
