Saints close out season-opening tournament with a split

ST. AUGUSTINE – The Flagler College volleyball team posted a 3-1 (25-21, 31-33, 25-20, 25-23) win over UNC Pembroke in the afternoon, but lost to Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University by the same score (20-25, 22-25, 25-23, 19-25) in the final match of the Flagler Saints Invitational on Saturday at Flagler Gymnasium.

Flagler finished the weekend with a 2-2 overall record. Embry-Riddle went 4-0 while Davenport University posted a 3-1 mark. Newberry College left with a 1-3 record and UNC Pembroke lost all four of its matches.

Against former Peach Belt Conference member UNC Pembroke, Logan Garcia had a team-high 16 kills, hit .560 and recorded six total blocks for the Saints. Jordan Berglin notched a double-double with 14 kills and 11 digs. Audrey Simmons contributed 11 kills. Kennedy Muff collected a double-double with a season-high 49 assists to go along with 10 digs. Edie Lamoreaux led the defense with 26 digs and she had four aces. Cameron Fenner tied her career-best with five aces and she added nine digs.

Shannon Skryd led the Braves with a match-high 18 kills and she completed the double-double with 16 digs. Katie Pressley had a double-double with 36 assists and 10 digs.

The two teams played a marathon second set with UNCP coming away with a 33-31 win. The Saints fought off five set points and the Braves fended off two set points. There were 13 lead changes and five ties in the set. It was the highest scoring set for Flagler since Oct. 27, 2018 when it played at Lander University and lost by the same score, but in the first set.

In the nightcap, the Saints faced their longtime rivals, the Eagles of Embry-Riddle. Both were members of the Florida Sun Conference in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA).

Simmons had another solid outing for Flagler as she had a team-high 13 kills and hit an efficient .320. Boyd recorded a career-high eight total blocks. Lamoreaux added 14 digs and had three aces.

Cameron Gilleland finished with a match-high 19 kills and she completed the double-double with 14 digs for Embry-Riddle. Jaden McBride had 16 kills, 13 digs and four aces.

The Saints overcame a 16-8 deficit in the third set. Flagler went on a 13-5 run to catch Embry-Riddle. With the score tied at 23, a double-block by Muff and Garcia gave the Saints set point and an Eagle hitting error ended the set.

Up next is the Flagler Saints Classic this upcoming weekend (Sept. 2-3). The Saints open with Emmanuel College (1 p.m.) and close the day on Friday with Bemidji State University (7:30 p.m.).
