ST. AUGUSTINE – Flagler College won a pair of matches to open the Flagler Saints Classic Friday at Flagler Gym. Flagler defeated Emmanuel College of Georgia 3-2 (22-25, 25-17, 25-14, 25-27, 15-11) and swept (25-17, 25-21, 25-19) Bemidji State University to close out the day.
Flagler is now 4-2 in the season.
Emmanuel (0-2 in the tournament) is now 1-5. Bemidji State (0-2) fell to 1-5 while Eckerd College (2-0) remained undefeated at 6-0. Southern New Hampshire University (1-1) is now 5-1.
The first match of the day for Flagler featured 19 ties and 12 lead changes. Each team won two sets to force the deciding set. A kill by
Logan Garcia sparked a 4-0 spurt that wiped out a 4-3 Lion advantage. Match point was decided upon by a service error, one of 14 Emmanuel had in the match.
Cecilia Robert recorded her first double-double as a Saint with 14 kills and 13 digs, both season highs.
Molly Boyd added 12 kills and hit an efficient .435 with just two errors on 23 swings. She added seven total blocks.
Audrey Simmons contributed nine kills and eight total blocks, the latter a season high.
Kennedy Muff turned in her second double-double of the season with 32 assists and 13 digs.
Edie Lamoreaux paced the defense with 16 digs.
Jordan Berglin had four of Flagler's 12 aces. Garcia had six total blocks.
Alaina Emminger recorded a match-high 19 kills for Emmanuel. Taylor Roberts added 10 more kills. Gabrielle McGlamery tallied 36 assists. Asia Queen and Isabella Appling each collected 10 digs.
In the evening session, the Saints put together a .365 hitting percentage with 41 kills and just 13 errors on 89 swings.
Simmons and Robert led a balanced attack with eight kills apiece. Simmons hit at a .545 clip with only two errors on 11 swings. Boyd added seven kills. Muff tallied 33 assists and
Cameron Fenner led with 10 digs.
Hallie Mertz led Bemidji State with a match-high nine kills. Lauren Justesen collected 13 digs while Emily Wade and Hally Holker each tallied 14 assists.
Flagler hosts Southern New Hampshire at 1 p.m. and will conclude the tournament with Eckerd at 7:30 p.m.
