ST. AUGUSTINE —
Paige Maseda tied the Flagler College softball single-season record for doubles with her 15th Saturday in game two in a Peach Belt Conference doubleheader versus USC Aiken. It was a twin bill that unfortunately ended in Pacers' favor as they upended the Saints, 10-1 and 11-2, at Flagler Field.
Flagler (25-22, 9-11 PBC) looks to salvage the final game of the three-game series on "Senior Day" at noon Sunday against USC Aiken (28-18, 10-10).
In what was a tight game through three innings, tied at zero in game one, ballooned to a 10-run advantage for the visiting team. The Pacers used small ball and Saints' miscues to piece together a seven-run fourth inning before spotting three more in the fifth frame.
Flagler didn't see a hit come until the fifth frame, ripping all three and scoring its lone run — thanks to
Trinity Fry's RBI-single to plate
Anna Dumovich who pinch ran for
Kyleigh Taylor — but it was the only one the Saints would see in the shortened five-inning game. Taylor,
Mercedes Salinas and Fry all had hits for the Saints versus pitcher Lakyn Phillips (W, 13-7).
Rachel Hester (L,11-10) only allowed three earned runs on 13 hits — with seven being unearned — as she struck out six.
USC Aiken's same game plan carried into game two as the Pacers used speed to get on base. Scoring 11 runs on 21 hits, the away team saw a pair of doubles with the rest being singles/bunts to stay on the Saints' heels all afternoon.
Madelyn Wise (L, 9-6) pitched the first three innings, while
Taylor Scott relieved her in the fourth frame.
Maseda's single-season record 15th double came in the first inning as she moved
Madelyn Childs around the bases to set her up for a sac fly — via Taylor — to cut the score to two runs in the first. The Pacers responded with another three-run frame in the second to pull away before spotting four runs in the seventh.
The Saints other run came in the fifth when
Gianna Amundsen pinch-hit and reached on an error. She scored
Valerie Beltre, who joined Maseda with a pair of hits. Dumovich and Taylor each had a stolen bases over the course of both games.
