VALDOSTA, Ga. – The No. 13 Flagler College women's tennis team went 2-0 in Georgia this week, defeating No. 56 Valdosta State University, 6-1, Friday afternoon at the Valdosta Tennis Courts. On Wednesday, the Saints bested No. 64 Georgia College, 5-2, to remain undefeated in conference play.
Flagler pocketed its sixth ranked win of the season and third straight to improve to 11-5 overall, while Valdosta State moves to 7-12.
Flagler continued the strong doubles play that the Saints have displayed all spring season, securing the opening point once again.
Anika Nissen and
Alessandra Traub won their eighth straight doubles match together, recording a 6-2 victory. The point was secured by the No. 7 doubles team in the nation of
Eden Schlagenhauf and
Luisa Hrda as they won their match at first doubles, 6-4, for the duo's 11th win in the spring.
Head coach
Rodrigo Puebla's squad's strong play in doubles carried over, with the team winning five of the six matches. At the top of the lineup, Hrda and Schlagenhauf scored singles win over nationally-ranked opponents. No. 5 Hrda, while at first singles, recorded her second ranked win behind a 6-2, 7-5 result against No. 60 Magda Tuells Bonet. Schlagenhauf posted a straight-set victory at second singles, 7-5, 6-3, against No. 52 Natalie Kohoutkova to clinch the match.
Traub picked up win No. 10 at third singles, coming out on top by a score of 6-4, 6-0. Nissen has now won 13 matches in a row, winning at fourth singles, 7-6 (2), 6-3.
Florencia Massardo Brain earned her eighth straight win with a 6-2, 6-0 win.
Flagler now turns its attention to a meeting of the top teams in the Peach Belt Conference, when No. 5 Columbus State University comes to the Flagler Tennis Center on Tuesday, April 19 at 10 a.m.
