Donovan Garcia on second base looking towards the first base coach

Game Recap: Baseball |

Saints rally in the ninth comes up short

ST. AUGUSTINE – Donovan Garcia went 2-for-3 with a double, a run scored, and he had one run batted in tonight in Flagler College's 10-5 loss to Georgia Southwestern State University in a Peach Belt Conference baseball game Friday at Drysdale Field.

Georgia Southwestern improved to 17-21 overall and 12-8 in the Peach Belt. Flagler is now 18-23 overall and 11-9 in conference play.

Trailing 10-3 going into the bottom of the ninth inning, the Saints loaded the bases without having to put the ball in play. Hurricane reliever Reese Jackowiak sandwiched a hit batter with two walks and was promptly relieved by Mike Monduy. Garcia's flyout to center allowed Luke Welborn to score from third base. Trey Newland walked to reload the bases and GSW turned to closer Brandt Sundean. He uncorked a wild pitch and the Saints trimmed the deficit to 10-5. But Sundean got a shallow fly out and ground out to end the game.

The Hurricanes did all of their damage in two innings. Tyler Skelton hit a two-run double and Gregory Wozniak belted a two-run home run in a five-run third inning. Anthony Angelino hit a grand slam off the right field foul pole in a five-run seventh inning.

Angelino finished 3-for-5 with the home run, five RBI, and he scored two runs. John Austin Sutton collected three singles and scored two runs. Skelton went 2-for-5 with a double, three RBI, and he scored two runs.

Nick McCollum (4-3) tossed seven innings, scattered five hits, and allowed one run. He retired 12-of-the-first-13 batters he faced.

Mason Gray singled twice and drew a walk for the Saints.

Gabriel Partridge (3-4) allowed five runs on seven hits in five innings of work. Ryan Franklin, Brad Vondruska, and Anthony Nofi worked in relief.

The same two teams meet tomorrow at 1 p.m. to wrap up the series.
