Milledgeville, Ga. – For the fifth time this year, the No. 17 Flagler College women's tennis team has taken down a nationally-ranked opponent, dispatching No. 64 Georgia College, 5-2, in a Peach Belt Conference matchup at Centennial Center Tennis Facility Wednesday afternoon.
Head coach
Rodrigo Puebla's squad has now won back-to-back matches against ranked teams to move to 10-5 on the year and a perfect 3-0 in the PBC. The Bobcats fall to 13-6 and 2-3 in conference matches.
The Saints continued their strong doubles play that has been consistent all year, with the team last dropping the opening doubles point at ITA National Indoors. The first match to finish resulted in a point for Flagler, with the second doubles' duo of
Alessandra Traub and
Anika Nissen winning their seventh straight match together — dating back to their last loss at ITA National Indoors in February — after posting a 6-3 victory. The doubles point was secured at third doubles by
Addison Skye Breunich and
Florencia Massardo Brain, winning 7-5 for the duo's sixth win in the spring season.
In the following singles matches, Flagler was able to capture wins at fourth and fifth singles to get two-of the-three required points to secure the victory. Nissen continued her terrific spring with her 12th-consecutive win, coming out on top 6-3, 6-4 at the four spot, while Massardo Brain took home win No. 8 in the spring season, 6-4, 6-3, on court five.
The victory was secured by the No. 5 ranked singles player in the land as
Luisa Hrda dispatched her opponent with a 6-4, 6-2 result for her 10th win at first singles in the spring and 21st overall.
Even though the match was already secured for the Saints, the teams split the two matches who had yet to finish. Traub hung on to win in a super breaker, 6-4, 0-6, 10-6 while Breunich was defeated in a super breaker, 7-5, 2-6, 6-10. The Bobcats got their other point at second singles, defeating
Eden Schlagenhauf, 6-2, 6-3.
The Saints next match has them in the Peach state for a third straight showdown with a ranked opponent when they take on No. 54 Valdosta State University this coming Friday at 2 p.m. at the Valdosta Tennis Courts.
