ST. AUGUSTINE –
Gage Voorhees (2-1) tossed a complete game two-hit shutout and struck out a career high 13 batters as Flagler College won its Peach Belt Conference opener 2-0 over Augusta University Friday night at Drysdale Field.
The last time a Flagler pitcher had a complete game shutout was May 12, 2018, by
Jett Walsh, who tossed a seven-inning four-hitter in a PBC Tournament game against Young Harris College. The last nine-inning complete shutout was March 24, 2017 by Michael Maiocco at Francis Marion University.
Flagler improved to 7-9 overall and Augusta University fell to 6-8.
After a base hit and a fielder's choice to start the game for Augusta, Voorhees retired the next 14 batters in a row. He allowed only two base runners the rest of the way.
Voorhees got all the offense he needed in the third inning.
Matthew Burke led off with a single up the middle, went to second on a passed ball and took third on an errant throw to second.
Trey Newland's single into the hole at shortstop scored Burke. Moments later, Newland stole second and took third on the catcher's errant throw. He scored on a ground out to give the Saints a 2-0 lead.
Mason Gray collected a pair of singles and stole a base.
Ashton Thomas,
John Fiorenza, and
Jaiden Warde had the other hits for Flagler.
Mason Bernard (0-2) scattered seven hits and allowed two runs, one earned, as he went the distance. He induced 14 flyouts and seven ground outs.
Charlie Erickson hit a double while Mason Robertson added a single for Augusta.
The same two teams meet in a doubleheader tomorrow at 1 p.m. at Drysdale Field.
